WE WELCOME A NEW CHAPTER IN ARMENIA’S FIGHT AGAINST FOOD WASTE
About
We are pleased to announce our strong support for the initiative to change the lives of people in need in Armenia — with the inspiration and partnership of Mr. Arash Derambarsh, a city councillor whose campaign against food waste led to a historic law in France that forces supermarkets to donate their unsold food to charity.
Now, together with Mr. Derambarsh, we are working to bring this powerful legislation to Armenia, so that no edible food is thrown away while thousands of families continue to struggle with hunger.

SUPERMARKETS WASTE FOOD
While over 80 million people across Europe live below the poverty line and struggle to feed their families, supermarkets in the EU still discard more than 40 kilograms of edible food every night.
To combat this contradiction, the #StopFoodWaste campaign proposed a clear solution: a national law that obliges supermarkets to donate unsold food instead of throwing it away — turning waste into hope for those in need.
TOWARDS A ZERO-WASTE ARMENIA:
A NEW INITIATIVE TO FIGHT FOOD WASTE AND FEED THOSE IN NEED
Inspired by France’s groundbreaking law passed on February 3, 2016, which has saved over 10 million meals per year from landfill and increased food donations to social aid organizations by more than 22%,
the Armenian Food Bank is launching a campaign to implement a similar law here in Armenia.
Our goal is simple but powerful:
To require all major supermarkets in Armenia to donate their unsold but still edible food to Armenian Food Bank, instead of throwing it away — just as it's already being done in France and across Europe.
This initiative will:
-
Reduce food waste on a national scale
-
Support thousands of vulnerable families across Armenia
-
Empower supermarkets to demonstrate real corporate social responsibility
-
Mobilize volunteers and civil society for more efficient food distribution
We believe Armenia can become a leader in the region by adopting this model and building a system where no good food goes to waste while no family goes hungry.
The Armenian Food Bank is calling on government officials, supermarket chains, and the public to support this important step forward for a more sustainable and compassionate Armenia.
